Tan Brook

Site 17. Tan Brook, tributary to Old Oaken Bucket Pond

Observed: 1-8 December 2000
42°11,16N, 70°44.73W to
42°11.15N, 70°44.76W
Narrative: Lance Van Lenten

"Tan Brook is a strongly flowing perennial stream which probably originates North of Hughey Lane. The depth ranged from about 10 to 16" in some places. The segment reveiwed with the survey form is behind 32 Pin Oak Drive. The owners were very supportive of our project. This stream is not accurately depicted on USGS or DEP GIS maps but appears to best resemble the stream map from the 1991 First Herring Brook Watershed Study by SEA, Inc.. Homes and yards abut the northern border of the stream. Stone walls on that side channelize the stream and do not provide good habitat. Nonpoint source pollution is a concern as evidenced by the stormwater report by CEI, the DPW engineering consultants. There is trash and some blockages. Yard trash was dumped in some places in the swampy wetlands along the South side. That side is also densely vegetated and should provide excellent habitat. Closer to Wagner's Brook the stream looked like it was channeled. At this point the stream is deeper and broader. This area, between Country Way and Wagner's Brook is very pretty with paths and views of Wagner's Brook. It could potentially be a nice sitting park.

A week after the survey Tan Brook was reviewed within Hick's Swamp. The area surrounding the stream was difficult to pass through because of the vegetation. There was a flag incorrectly(?) marked "intermittent" along the stream. Further investigation was left for the next stream survey session."
