Introduction

This report summarizes the results of a visual survey of the streams and water bodies of the First Herring Brook watershed in Scituate and Norwell, Massachusetts. The survey was conducted in December 2000 utilizing the Adopt-A-Stream Shoreline Survey assessment tool developed by the Riverways Program, a division of the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Environmental Law Enforcement.

Section A of this report contains a descriptive narrative and an example of a completed survey form. A complete copy of all survey forms will be given to the Conservation Commission. Section B contains maps. Section C contains a "snap shot" tour of each of the visited sites. Photographs and information from March 22 and the second survey conducted March 31 through April 8 are included. Section D contains the Action Plan which was compiled with the assistance of Rachel Calabro, the Adopt-A-Stream coordinator of the Riverways Program. The Action Plan lists both the assets and problems discovered during the survey process. It also prioritizes short and long term plans for remedial action and the First Herring Brook Watershed Initiative (FHBWI) goals.

Included in the Appendix is a macro invertebrate sampling study of the First Herring Brook Watershed which is part of a North and South Rivers Watershed Association (NSRWA) project by Fred SaintOurs Jr. Macro invertebrates are organisms whose abundance and diversity can indicate the health of a watershed.

Future stream surveys will focus on habitat, natural buffers, storm water control, and water quality. A final report and presentation based on all surveys and related projects over an eighteen month period will be presented to the community. This information will be incorporated into a Scituate Surface Water Supply Protection Plan which will be developed with Comprehensive Environmental Incorporated. This effort is supported by a grant from the Department of Environmental Protection.
