Welcome to FHBWI

The First Herring Brook Watershed Initiative consists mostly of Scituate, MA residents with a wide variety of environmental backgrounds and interests.

FHBWI is affiliated with the nonprofit North and South Rivers Watershed Association and Maxwell Conservation Trust. The Department of Environmental Protection has recently updated a map of Scituate's surface water supply based on field work and information in our First Herring Brook Watershed Report FHBWI members participated in the creation of the 2004 Water Study Committee Report for the town of Scituate.

FHBWI is currently conducting stream flow research under the leadership Margaret Kearns from the Riverways Program RIFLS project. FHBWI is assisting with the Riverway's and Water Resources Committee's efforts to restore the herring run in First Herring Brook. Our group also recently completed a stormwater project with funds from an EPA 319 grant that was augmented with a 319 grant procured by the Scituate Conservation Commission under the leadership of former Chairman Michael Clark. The intitial stormwater project included a watershed group from Longmeadow, Massachusetts. The project was led by Rachel Calabro and Amy Singler from Riverways.

Several members of FHBWI have been appointed to the Scituate Water Resources Committee. This committee was officially launched by the Board of Selectmen at their November 21, 2006 meeting. Voting members include Jeffrey Rosen, Dr. Hart Peterson, Robert Murray, Elise Kline and Lance Van Lenten, the ex-officio member is Water Superintendent Eugene Babin.
